Are you a fan of Texas Toast? If you’ve ever tried it, then you probably already are. This is one of the few menu items that Raising Cane’s serve (view Raising Cane’s menu here) and it works great with their chicken fingers. It’s also the sandwich bread in Whataburger’s.

There are legends about the origins of the Texas Toast, but not everything’s confirmed. Most experts are sure that it started out at Texas BBQ restaurant called the Pig Stand. One worker there used bread that was twice as thick as usual, just to make it even more obvious that “everything’s bigger in Texas”.

But he found out quickly enough that these thick bread slices wouldn’t fit in his bread toaster. So, what he did was just butter up the bread slices, and then he toasted them on the griddle before serving. It became popular, and it remains a classic.

While it’s not all that expensive to just buy your Texas Toast at Raising Cane’s, what if you don’t have a Raising Cane’s location near you? That doesn’t mean you have to go without your favorite bread. You can always make your own Texas Toast, and it’s not as if it’s all that difficult. It will probably be better than the ‘Texas Toast” you buy at a grocery.

Ingredients

  • 1½ sticks (¾ c.) butter, melted
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp. garlic powder
  • ½ tsp. dried parsley or Italian seasoning
  • ¼ tsp. kosher salt
  • 1 loaf white bread, sliced into about 10 (¾-inch) slices

Steps to Take

  1. Preheat the oven to 400° F.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the melted butter, garlic, garlic powder, dried parsley, and salt. That’s all the ingredients except for the white bread.
  3. Lay out bread slices onto a sheet tray and brush both sides of each slice generously with the garlic-butter mixture.
  4. Bake the toast, flipping halfway through after about 12 minutes until the bread is golden.
  5. Serve them while they’re hot.

You can use this to accompany your fried chicken, or as part of your Italian meal.

4 Hearty Sandwiches

Now that you have your Texas Toast slices, it’s time to put them to use. Try making this sandwich, which uses common kitchen ingredients.

  • 8 slices of Texas toast
  • 400g of precooked bacon
  • 8 slices of meat (your choice)
  • 4 slices of cheese (American will do just fine)
  • Some lettuce
  • Some red onion
  • Some mayo

Once you’ve gathered the ingredients, here are the steps to take:

  1. Smear mayo on one of the Texas toast slices for each sandwich.
  2. Set the cheese and the meat, and then the bacon on top of that meat.
  3. Add 2 slices of tomato, the sliced onions, and the lettuce.
  4. Cover it all up with the top Texas toast.

Relax and eat!  

Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese

This is the sandwich you get when you combine a sloppy joe with a grilled cheese sandwich. Your ingredients will include:

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • ¼ cup chopped onion
  • ½ to 2 Tbsp. prepared mustard (though it depends on your preferences)
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ½ Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 10 to 12 slices of Texas toast bread
  • 6 Tbsp. butter, softened
  • 3 to 4 cups shredded cheese (but you can add more if you like)

Once you’ve gathered everything, it’s time to start:

  1. Brown the ground beef with the onion in a skillet until fully cooked. Drain off any grease.
  2. Add the mustard, ketchup, brown sugar, and Worcestershire, and let things simmer for 5 minutes.
  3. Spread some butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  4. Place 1 slice of bread on the skillet or griddle, with the butter side down.
  5. Now sprinkle some of the cheese on the Texas toast.
  6. Add a scoop of the ground beef with onion mixture.
  7. Top off with more of the shredded cheese.
  8. Set the top piece of bread, with the butter side up.
  9. Cook on medium heat until the bottom is browned, and then flip over the sandwich and cook until browned as well.

These are so delicious that you might just end up inhaling them. That’s why you need at least 6 sandwiches, even if there are just 3 of you.

Classic Monte Cristo Sandwich

A Monte Cristo might take half an hour to make, but it’s easy. You also end up with 2 sandwiches, which you just might finish yourself.

  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • ⅛ tsp. pepper
  • 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard
  • 4 slices Texas toast
  • 4 deli-style slices of Swiss cheese
  • 4 deli-style slices of roasted turkey breast
  • 2 deli-style slices baked ham
  • 6 Tbsp. Smucker’s Seedless Red Raspberry Jam (divided)
  • 2 Tbsp. butter (divided)
  • 2 tsp. powdered sugar

When you’re done gathering these, you can start:

  1. Use a fork to beat the eggs in a 13 x 9-inch pan. Mix in the milk, salt, and pepper, and then set aside for a moment.
  2. Spread the mustard on 2 slices of Texas toast.
  3. Top each slice in this recommended order (but it’s really up to you):
    1. 1 slice cheese
    1. 2 slices turkey
    1. 1 slice ham
    1. The remaining cheese.
  4. Spread a tablespoon of jam on both the remaining slices of Texas toast.
  5. Using medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large, nonstick skillet.
  6. Meanwhile, set the sandwiches in the egg mixture for 10 seconds. Soak the other side as well. Then place the sandwiches in the skillet.
  7. Lower the heat for the butter to medium low, and cook for about 6 to 7 minutes. That’s enough time for the bottom to turn golden brown.
  8. Melt the remaining butter in the skillet, turn the sandwiches, and cook the sandwiches on the skillet with the butter for another 4 to 5 minutes.
  9. Sprinkle the sandwiches with some powdered sugar.
  10. Microwave the remaining ¼ cup of jam in a bowl on high, for about 45 seconds. Whisk this until it’s syrupy, and then serve the melted jam with the sandwiches.
