Great day for release date news related to PlayStation, it seems. Minutes after PlayStation announced that God of War Ragnarok would launch on November 9, 2022, Square Enix just announced that the PS5/PC game, Forspoken, would be delayed by 3.5 months from October 11, 2022, to January 24, 2023.
Forspoken has been missing from recent PlayStation shows, but the delay announcement insists it’s not because there were any issues. It says the delay is a “strategic decision,” that all game elements are complete, and they’re just polishing.
It’s not usually seen as a very “strategic” move to postpone your game for about a month after the busy holiday window, and it’s so busy because… the publishers want to buy their games as gifts during the holidays. And the November 9 date in God of War doesn’t feel like it would have interfered with the October 11 issue of Forspoken.
In terms of the other big competition in the fall, there really isn’t much, given that with the myriad pandemic-based delays. The biggest release is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on October 28, again, not something that looks like it would have hit Forspoken’s fingers, so I’m not quite sure what’s going on here. And I’m not sure I trust Square Enix to give us a completely straight answer, as on paper this is pointless unless the game actually needs more time. Which is fine! But they are really trying their best to say so Not The reason for the delay, who knows.
Forspoken is an uncharted territory for Square Enix, a brand new IP, so they probably just want to disconnect it completely Out of the fall release window, even if this is overall one of the least busy frames we’ve seen. Games often seem to be delayed from fall to February or March of the following year usually, but not January, so I think this time period would be wide open for Forspoken to have a news cycle or two with its release.
We will see what happens. PlayStation gamers have been looking forward to another game exclusive to brag about, and early looks at the game’s spellcasting were pretty cool. But I still wanted to see more of it, and the ad says we should actually take another look later this summer, so stay tuned for that.
