The fantasy RPG Forspoken for Square Enix and Luminous Productions has been delayed for a second time, with a launch now in early 2023.
The announcement came in a tweet from the official Forspoken account, which read: “As a result of ongoing discussions with key partners, we have made a strategic decision to move the launch date of Forsboken to January 24, 2023.”
The statement gives no indication that the game is in particularly poor condition. In fact, it says that “all elements of the game are now complete, development is in its final phase” which all look promising.
The statement concludes with a promise that fans can look forward to an additional update to the game “later this summer.”

Prior to this announcement of the delay, Forspoken was expected to launch on PS5 and PC on October 11, 2022. Turning the release date into a brand new year might seem like a lot but it only takes a few months, which isn’t a huge deal. The extra amount of time to wait if it means doing it right.
However, if you’re keen to get your hands on Forspoken, you’ll be aware that this is the game’s second delay – it was originally supposed to release in May 2022, but Luminous Productions announced a delay in March, saying the development team needed more time to polish .
When Forspoken launches on January 24, 2023, it will be playable on PC and PS5.
The highs and lows of release date for PS5 owners
Forspoken’s strategic delay is certainly a different reason than the first, but it’s somewhat ambiguous. It is interesting that it was previously Rumored from the Xbox Era podcast (Opens in a new tab) Speculative host Nick that Square Enix could have considered pushing Forspoken into 2023 if there was a chance of getting Final Fantasy 16 by the end of 2022.
However, Final Fantasy 16 currently has a ‘Summer 2023’ release window, a good period after Forspoken, even with this delay. Besides, Final Fantasy 16 isn’t ready yet either, with Naoki Yoshida confirmed in a file an interview (Opens in a new tab) Just last month though “the game is fully playable from start to finish” there are “a lot of audio feedback in several languages still to be recorded” and that “a year is a short time in game development, so we’re all striving a bit to get over Line. ”
Forspoken’s turn to January in 2023 looks like a very exciting year for Square Enix, with Final Fantasy 16 expected sometime in the middle of the year and Final Fantasy 7 Part 2 likely to eventually release with the “next winter” window. At the very least, this delay will give Square Enix and Luminous Productions more time to build up anticipation for Forspoken.
While the Forspoken delay is a blow to PS5 owners today, the latter half of 2022 won’t be empty on console. In fact, this bad news may have been more than offset for many by the long-awaited confirmation that a highly anticipated PS5 exclusive, God of War: Ragnarök, is slated to release on November 9, 2022.
