The Concacaf W Championship is taking place in Monterrey, Mexico, with Match Day 1 officially in the books for both groups. Eight teams are vying for a place in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Finals in Australia and New Zealand. The tournament is also a qualifier for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and the inaugural Concacaf W Gold Cup in 2024.
USWNT, Jamaica, Canada and Costa Rica are among the first contenders to break out of their groups in the World Cup Finals after posting wins to unlock multiplayer. Canada currently has the highest goal difference after beating Trinidad and Tobago 6-0 on Tuesday. Olympic gold medalists top Group B after winning thanks to a double from Julia Grosso.
The tournament also saw VAR debut in the competition, and it was used in each of the opening four matches, including a review of potential penalties. The VAR has ruled four penalties at the moment, but only one has been converted in the opening four matches.
The Concacaf W will continue with multiplayer on Thursday, July 7, with USWNT facing Jamaica, and Haiti playing Mexico. The second group continues in the group stage on Friday, July 8, with Panama facing Canada, and Trinidad and Tobago trying to return to facing Costa Rica.

Concacaf W . schedule and standings
Eight teams will be divided into two groups of four to play the role of Robin. Each team will play each other once in the group stage, and the top two teams will reach the semi-finals and qualify for the 2023 World Cup. The two third-placed teams in each group will go to the Confederation Cup playoff scheduled for February 2023 as a last chance to win first place in world Cup. As it stands, only the AFC region has identified its teams for that round, with play-offs Thailand and Chinese Taipei awaiting play-offs from CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, UEFA, CAF and OFC.
There is a lot at stake (outside of the medal) for the third-place match in the W Championship. This is because the winner of the W Championship will qualify for the 2024 Paris Summer Games and the inaugural 2024 CONCACAF Gold Cup, but the loser in the title game will then need to play the third-place winner in the CONCACAF Olympic match. Last place in the summer games.
From the US point of view, if they reach the final and fail to win the Concacaf W Cup this summer, they will need to play for their Olympic lives in a playoff against the third-placed winner in September 2023. How that happens. That sound of some potential plot?
