President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke Wednesday with Sheryl Greiner, wife of WNBA star Britney Grenier, according to a statement from the White House. Britney Greiner has been held in Russia on drug charges since February.
During the call, Biden read a draft of a letter he intended to send to Britney Grenier.
“The President has offered his support to the family of Cheryl and Britney, and has committed to ensuring that they receive all possible assistance while his administration pursues every avenue to bring Britney home,” the statement read.
Britney Grenier has been detained in Russia since February 17, accused by Russian authorities of keeping a cartridge of cannabis oil in her luggage at an airport near Moscow. Her trial began on Friday. On Monday, Britney Greiner sent Biden a letter asking for his help.
The US government has designated Greiner as “unjustly detained” and is working to secure her release regardless of the outcome of the trial.
A White House statement on Wednesday described Britney Grenier as being “unjustly detained in Russia under intolerable conditions.”
She also said Biden had instructed his national security team to keep “regular contact” with Sheryl Greiner and Britney Grenier’s family. Sheryl Greiner has publicly expressed her frustration with Biden and his administration’s efforts to secure his wife’s release.
