July 6 (Reuters) – UK antitrust watchdog Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) is investigating whether the US tech giant is hurting competition by giving its sellers an unfair advantage over third-party sellers in the market.

Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority said it opened an investigation on Tuesday over concerns that Amazon’s practices affecting sellers in its home market could be anti-competitive and could lead to a worse deal for customers.

The inquiry follows an ongoing European Commission investigation that looks into similar concerns but does not cover issues affecting the UK after Brexit.

The British regulator said its investigation will focus on three main areas, including how the Seattle-based company collects and uses third-party seller data and how it determines eligibility criteria to sell under the Prime brand.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment outside of normal business hours.
