“I have faith that I can recover, get back on track and finish what I started,” says Spanish midfielder Alexia Putillas, after the ACL injury that ruled her on the eve of Euro 2022.
“I can ask why at the start of the Euros when I spent so much time dreaming and working towards,” the 28-year-old wrote on Instagram.
“But I won’t do that.”
Butillas, who won the Ballon d’Or this season after leading Barcelona to the Spanish title and the Champions League final, played 100 games and scored 27 goals for the national team.
She represented the main hope for Spain, who had never reached the final of a major tournament.
She continued, “I feel like I’ve been privileged for a long time. I just feel so grateful for all the happiness that I feel every day that is so hard for others to enjoy.”
“Now a new phase begins for me. Since I can remember, I have not gone more than five days without kicking football, training or playing.
“Without a doubt I will be a fan and I will live, scream and feel every moment from the stands.”
