Before players turn their attention to the 150th Open in St Andrews, they will first head to North Berwick, Scotland, for the 2022 Scottish Open. The Scottish Open is a precursor to this year’s final Grand Slam and marks the first joint event between DP World and the Tour The PGA is outside the World Golf Championship.
As such, a solid course was formed with 14 of the 15 best players in the official world golf rankings choosing to play at the Renaissance Club. The only name missing from this list is world number two Rory McIlroy, who has capped four straight weeks of competition in the Travelers Championship. The Northern Irish are preparing for the Open on their own, and given the fact that he has finished inside the top ten of all three major leagues this season, he probably shouldn’t be questioned.
In his absence, world number one Scottie Scheffler will be looking to re-enter the winner’s circle for the first time since his Masters victory. Twice in second place since then, Texans have been joined by top players such as John Ram, Justin Thomas and Sam Burns, all of whom finished in the top 20 at last year’s Scottish Open.
As players hope to peak next week, the power of competition at the Scottish Open is high, and with it will come the quality of golf normally reserved for major tournaments.
