Spider-Man: There’s no way home It hit theaters in December, paving the way for storytelling marvel Fans to jump after that Doctor Strange in a multiverse of madness in May. But while the latest Spider-Man movie predated Strange in theaters by about five months, Doctor Strange began streaming on Disney Plus in late June, long before No Way Home was available to stream anywhere.

to increase confusion, Spider-Man: There’s no way home It’s not coming to Disney Plus, though actor Tom Holland’s Spider-Man routinely appears in Disney’s Marvel movies and Benedict Cumberbatch portrays Strange in both films.

When and where will Spider-Man: No Way Home air?

No Way Home will begin airing on Starz starting July 15.

Although Spider-Man is part of the so-called Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is very much a Disney juggernaut, Sony is actually the studio behind No Way Home. And Sony has a completely different approach to streaming its movies.

Sony has an agreement in place for 2021 films to move to the premium cable network Starz first, where they are available to watch on its traditional channels as well as on the streaming app. So Starz will start broadcasting No Way Home on July 15th.

When and where is Doctor Strange available to stream?

Doctor Strange in a multiverse of madness Press Disney Plus on June 22. It is available to stream at no additional cost to all subscribers.

That’s about 47 days after it was widely released in theaters, much faster than the last two Marvel films shown on Disney Plus. Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings It was in cinemas for 70 days prior to airing on Disney Plus; for eternitywas 68 days.

If Doctor Strange stuck to that schedule as well, it would have been available on Disney Plus around mid-July. With this film, however, Disney is approaching the standards of other major studios, who have been drawn largely to give films a window of theatrical exclusivity lasting around 45 days.

Why do streaming release dates make no sense?

Both films may be part of the MCU, but the streaming strategies for these films couldn’t be different.

The main reason for the differences is that the Marvel characters in the movie were split between two different studios, the Disney-owned Marvel Studios and Sony. Spider-Man, as a character, is derived from Marvel, but Disney’s Marvel struck a complicated licensing-sharing deal with Sony for characters from the Spider-Man comics.

All of the independent Spider-Man universe films are produced and distributed by Sony. Marvel takes care of the rest.

Each company can arrange to “borrow” characters (and the actors they play) from the other to be a part of their MCU films. That’s why Holland appears regularly in Disney Avengers films, and Cumberbatch played Doctor Strange not only in Sony’s No Way Home but also in Disney’s Multiverse of Madness. That’s why you too Can Stream some movies on Disney Plus with Holland as Spider-Man – but you I can not Stream any of the Spider-Man specials there.

Furthermore, Disney and Sony have dramatically different streaming strategies.

Disney has its own streaming service; Sony does not. Disney has been resilient during the pandemic, constantly changing when (and if) movies go to theaters and how long they stay there before airing. On the other hand, a deal between Sony and Starz was struck years ago, before the pandemic accelerated the speed with which new movies arrived on the streaming service.

Disney launched Disney Plus just four months before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Almost immediately, Disney reimagined the service as the outlet for the release of big new movies. Some Disney films – usually mid-budget live-action films and Pixar films like Luca and Soul – have completely skipped theaters and are available to stream on Disney Plus at no additional cost. For the biggest movies, Disney Plus has introduced its Premier Access model to sell streaming access to new big-screen movies for an additional fee of $30.

Then with the reopening of the community last year, Disney reintroduced exclusive theatrical performances. But Disney’s “windows” – the time period after the movie opened in theaters but before it began airing – were all over the map. incanto He spent a month in theaters before broadcasting. for marvel‘s eternityIt was two. West Side Story — Steven Spielberg’s reimagining of music — hit Disney Plus about three months after it was shown exclusively in cinemas.

Now, with Doctor Strange arriving at Disney Plus after 47 days, Disney is heading towards the new normal in the industry of giving the movies about a month and a half as theatrical exclusives.

But Sony’s approach to streaming couldn’t be more different.

Unlike Disney, Sony does not operate its own streaming service. So Sony’s strategy is to license its movies to others for TV and broadcast, driving revenue from these deals in the process.

Sony and Starz struck their deal back in 2017, when movies used to be exclusively in theaters for 75 to 90 days with them banned from airing for six to nine months after they appeared in cinemas. Although the pandemic has upended movie-release traditions, Sony’s deal with Starz still adheres to pre-pandemic standards.

This is why Spider-Man: No Way Home is taking longer to start airing on Starz: its timeline is an artifact from a different era of movies.
