Ja Morant is one of the young stars in the NBA, but since he’s still on the rise — and doesn’t play in a particularly large market — he can still not recognize him when he’s abroad. This was the case when the Memphis Grizzlies star left a big tip for a waitress who had no idea who he was. Once I realized this, I was too shocked to continue the conversation.
The moment was captured in a video for the third episode of Morant’s YouTube: Docuseries Filmed by his own videographer, known on social media as call it ni.
Morant was in the middle of a FaceTime call with his daughter over lunch. He had just tip the waitress $500 and she looked at him not quite sure what was going on, or who the generous tipper was. She’s asked if she sees the number right because… well, who wouldn’t when you see $500 in the tip line for a dinner for a meal for a few people.
“Yes, who are you, though?” She asked.
Morant responded by saying it was “the Black Jesus,” but that wasn’t a satisfactory answer for her. The waitress asked him which school he went to, but he told her he was not from all over the area, he was from South Carolina.
At this point in the conversation, she still didn’t know who he was, but she was starting to guess that he might have been an athlete. Morant told her she played basketball, and asked if he’d go to the NBA.
“I’m already in the NBA,” Morant replied.
I was informed that he played for the Memphis Grizzlies, a team that I became acquainted with because of a certain player.
“This team is a running ball player…” she paused, forgetting his name.
Those who came to lunch with him told her that the player whose name she was trying to remember was sitting right in front of her. I screamed and took a second to continue.
“Are you that boy?” she asked and used her hands to show off his off-season hairstyle. “What is your name?”
When he answered his full name she covered her mouth and ran to the back of the restaurant.
