Widely expected to win the CONCACAF W Championship and seal their berth in both the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 Olympics, the USWNT confirmed their dominance at this year’s tournament with a fantastic outing against Haiti.
Alex Morgan opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a superb shot past Haitian goalkeeper Lara Larco. Mallory Pugh assisted the goal with a superb pass from outside 18 to give the Americans a 1-0 lead.

While the first half was dominant from the United States, Haitian striker Melchy Domornay put some pressure on the American defense line and got a shot at goalkeeper Casey Murphy before Emily Fox was called up for a foul inside the 18 to award the Haitians a penalty.
Roselord Borghella scored the penalty for Haiti in the 42nd minute, and while Murphy expected a foul, the ball hit the post and widened to keep the match 2-0 in favor of the United States.

The USWNT’s backline looked shaky in the first half and no doubt caused some consternation for the Americans. However, it was a much better start for the United States after two slow starts against Colombia in an international friendly match last month.

The US had a slow start into the second half, which in turn allowed Haiti to feel comfortable and stable in the match. And although Midge Pierce, Ashley Sanchez, Christy Moyes, Sofia Huerta and Megan Rapinoe intervened after the break, the Americans struggled to find the net for the third time.
Rapinoe and Boris came close in the 77th minute, but the call was called off for offside after review. However, Pierce took advantage of the Americans’ third goal of the night in the 84th minute with a shot from the center of the penalty area.

While the second half was disappointing, Monday’s game overall was a solid start to the championship for the Americans. However, they will need to play better over the next two weeks to earn a place in the final.
The USWNT will take the field again Thursday against Jamaica at 7 p.m. ET. A victory would put the Americans in a good position to win the first set.
