DETROIT (AP) – Garrett Hill won his first major league run by delivering an impressive six runs, and Miguel Cabrera made a solo run as the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-1 on Monday in the opening game with a double header for the day and night.
The Guardians have played their third double-header in seven days and their seventh this season.
A round 26 pick by the Tigers in 2018, Hill (1-0) allowed only two hits, including a home run by Josh Naylor. Hit three and walked one.
Hill drew attention last year after participating in a Fall Stars game in the Arizona League. The 26-year-old right-hander has been a combined 4-2 with a 3.23 ERA in 15 combined starts in Triple-A and Double-A this season.
In 2005, another rookie for the Tigers made his 4th of July debut against Cleveland – on that day, Justin Verlander lost.
The Tigers soothing Andrew Chavin, Michael Vollmer and Gregory Soto joined forces for three no-stroke rounds. Soto worked ninth and hit his 16th tackle, sprinting twice before Owen Miller retired to the ground.
The lowest two hits the Cleveland Fighters have this season (June 18 at the Dodgers) and the lowest allowed by the Detroit Shooters (June 1 against Minnesota).
Jonathan Schaup, who entered the match with a .191 hit, scored four singles on four bat hits and scored two rounds.
Cabrera’s first-half single gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead and put him in 3,060 hits, tied Craig Biggio for 25th on the all-time list. 1,831 RBIs tied him with Manny Ramirez. Cabrera has now arrived safely in 10 matches.
Cleveland player Zach Plisack (2-6) went six games and lost.
Miles Straw of The Guardians attempted a goal in Steve Kwan’s third solo game but it didn’t slip and was flagged by catcher Tyler Barnhart after a throw from left-back Robbie Grossman. An upside-down replay of the original safe call to referee Eric Bacchus.
Naylor hit his eleventh home, connecting on the fourth. Naylor walked on the seventh and came out with back spasms. Miller ran his pinch.
Javier Báez hit the RBI single at number seven and Tucker Barnhart Singles Scoop at number eight.

Guardians: C Austin Hedges was eligible to return from IL from a concussion on Sunday but did not. Guardians team manager Terry Francona said Hedges would not return on Monday.
