Tegucigalpa, Honduras (AFP) – Inmates from a powerful Honduran street gang have killed six of them inside a prison in northwest Honduras, authorities said Monday.
Prison guards found the bodies of six inmates of the Barrio 18 gang stacked in a corridor during a routine search early Monday in Ilama prison.
“We have six people who died in this prison,” Deputy National Police Commissioner Marlon Lagos told local media. “We are investigating, screening and also interviewing the different unit coordinators to determine motivation.”
Lagos said he did not know how the prisoners were killed, but forensic specialists were working on the scene.
At least 90 members of the Barrio 18 gang are being held inside the prison for a variety of crimes ranging from drug smuggling to extortion and murder.
